Causes for the University Presidents Forum
Bridging the World: An Integration of Eastern and Western Educational Philosophies
Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum Initiates a New International Platform of Education
Chaur-shin Yung, Chancellor and President of FGS International University Consortium
and Fo Guang University
“Fostering talents through education” has always been Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s tenet since the foundation of Fo Guang Shan. After a long-term hard work and efforts, “Million-member Fundraising Campaign” comes to fruition. The establishment of the five-in-one “Fo Guang Shan International University Consortium” in 2014 set an extraordinary standard of higher education; meanwhile, Master Hsing Yun extended his idea of college education to international academic exchange and cooperation, furthering to engage presidents and scholars all over the world to the University Presidents Forum and thus initiated the “Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum” as an inception to proceed to better education.
The first Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum was grandly organized in Fo Guang Shan Monastery on Oct. 1st, 2016 with participation of presidents and scholars from 21 universities in 11 countries around the world. The second Forum was again held in the same venue on Nov. 3rd, 2017 with even more participation of delegation from 40 universities in 16 countries worldwide. The Forum has been becoming productive because of more and more participation and exchange of presidents and scholars. The “2018 Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum” first took place on November 1st and 2nd in Fo Guang University in Yilan, November 3rd in Nanhua University in Chiayi, and November 4th in Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Kaohsiung.
The University Presidents Forum has been plentiful and substantial for the past three years and again this year, furthering discussion and exchange of topics that look into Management of Universities and International Exchange, The Practice of Buddhism and Modern Society, Buddhism Thinking and Contemporary Culture, and Moral and Character Education for University Students all for the eventual goal of reaching a consensus among Buddhist university standards, enriching Buddhist educational philosophy, and facilitating future international cooperation and development among universities. The goal of the Forum also aims to implement a solid educational platform for Buddhist university presidents and scholars to meet, understand, share and learn from one another.
Education is not only about altruistic work of nurturing talents, but it is also about development of virtue and purification of mind. Through the accumulation of time, effort, and infinite kindness from million-member fundraising campaigns came the materialization of the idea of preserving wisdom for oneself, preserving college for society, preserving merits and blessings for future generation, and preserving achievement for all mankind. Fo Guang Shan has hitherto been the only religious organization that founded such unique features with plenty of resources all around the world. The Fo Guang Shan University residents Forum has become the pivotal force that pushes forward contemporary higher education.
As Venerable Master Hsing Yun stated in the Dharma Assembly: Prayer for Fund-raising Members, “even, we expect a college that can fulfill the mission of inheriting the past and ushering in the future, and even, we expect a college can assume the responsibility of enlightening people.” It’s the indispensable duty of Fo Guang Shan University Presidents Forum to undertake the mission to keep up the efforts in fostering talents worldwide as well as turn Buddhist Education into the core of academic education all around the world, furthering implementation of Buddha’s kind and great teachings that enhance human happiness.

FOUNDER’S WORDS
The Meaning of “University”
Each year, anxious students strive for successful admittance into university. Their parents become worried and teachers are concerned. Even university teachers and students are preoccupied with tasks such as recruit¬ment, enrolment, and examinations. Evidently, a major segment of society becomes occupied by university examinations and admissions.
University (literally "great school") is not superior to high schools or primary schools in the sense that it has a larger campus, more magnificent buildings, or a greater student population. Some universities many even have fewer students and smaller campuses. However, university graduates are exceedingly outstanding. For example, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States may not be very big, but any graduate from there will be regarded as prestigious.
Since the greatness of universities do not lie in their tangible criteria, then, what exactly is the meaning of university? Here are four points of reference:
1) To Have Great Knowledge
"University" in Chinese, literally means "great school", in others words, university is a place of learning for great people. It must uphold the duties of an international academic center principled on culture and education. To study at a university is to gain great knowledge, great vision, great perspectives, and great thinking. With international, modern, and future perspectives, the whole world is home, and the universe our place. We are thus able to inherit greatness and create a future in educating the world. Only then can we be a person of great vision.
2) To Have Great Morality
Being in university means one is no longer a child. Being in university means that one must have self-discipline and confidence, and also awareness in developing integrity, aspiring for greatness, and asserting great vows. Only then can one muster great energy within, and bring into play the value and meaning of life.
3) To Have Great Magnanimity
To have read many books but remain narrow-minded, or to be very knowledgeable but remain small in heart deems your education meaningless. A university, though small in size, can broaden my mind. This allows me to embody the entire world and all sentient beings in my heart and the entire river of history to flow through my mind. With a heart as big as the vast emptiness, and with much cultivation, I am able to become a great person capable of great things. This is the meaning of "university".
4) To Have a Great Path
Most people prefer to drive on wide roads. Six or eight-lane highways are certainly better than four. It is the same in life. Not only must we find our own great path; we must help others do the same. The great path is the truth. The great path is the light of hope. Thus, "university" means to be on the great path.
University is a shrine of knowledge, a sanctuary for spreading the truth, a cradle of greatness, and a place of practice for aspiring champions and elites. It must possess the underlying intentions of humanism and culture, the spirit of cultivation, the emphasis of dual-attainment of merit and wisdom, as well as understanding and practice. What is meant by university? The four points above are the expectations and self-education we strive for.
1. To have great knowledge. 2. To have great morality.
3. To have great magnanimity. 4. To have a great path.
About FGS University Consortium
Starting in 1991, Venerable Master Hsing Yun has established University of the West in the United States, Fo Guang and Nanhua Universities in Taiwan, and Nan Tien Institute in Australia. On July 17th, 2011, the Presidents of these four universities launched the Fo Guang Shan Four-in-One University Consortium. Dr. Yung Chaur-shin, former Minister of Education and current President of Fo Guang University, was appointed as Chairman and Chief. This set forth Taiwan’s first international collaborative system for universities and a milestone for higher education. In 2014, Guang Ming College in the Philippines became the fifth higher education institution under the auspices of Fo Guang Shan Education Council.
Since its inception, the FGS Five-in-One University Consortium has initiated numerous teacher and student exchange programs. Furthermore, students are provided opportunities for cross-enrollment at partner universities, distance learning, and postgraduate degrees. Through the synergy of the Consortium and the shared resources of Fo Guang Shan branch temples worldwide, students are assisted in reaching their dreams of overseas employment. The Consortium also collaborates with Fo Guang Shan’s 300 branch temples and enterprises including BLTV, the Merit Times, the Buddha Museum, Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery, Water Drop Teahouse, and publications, in providing students with job opportunities after graduation.
Having never received any form of formal education, it is the most fervent wish of Venerable Master Hsing Yun that all be provided with the opportunity and access he was denied. With his genuine commitment to fostering places of education, he holds true to his pledge of “impart wisdom to self, bequeath a university to society, confer merits to future generations, and bestow accomplishments to the public.” In addition to its five universities, Fo Guang Shan’s educational institutions also include high schools, junior high schools, elementary schools, kindergarten, and 16 Buddhist colleges across the world.
In his determination to realize his vow of founding Buddhist universities, Venerable Master was inspired by the founders of ancient schools in China and their resolve. As such, Venerable Master initiated the Million-Member Fund Raising campaign, inviting the public to support the establishment of schools and educational foundations through monthly donations of NT$100.
Other fundraisers include alms-processions, wholesale recycling, charity sales of calligraphy and paintings, and charity concerts of oldies. Deeply impressed by these efforts to garner people’s support and concern for education, Yu,Yuh-Chao, former Head of the Ministry of Education’s Department of Higher Education, once asserted, “This is what real education is. This is education for all.”
